Get Connected In Your New Community with a ParkRun

The process of relocating to a different nation involves more than selecting a residence. It also includes exploring the local area, meeting new people and identifying activities that create a sense of belonging.

As part of our Asian Tigers Community Connect series, we are highlighting parkrun in Malaysia, a free weekly community event that brings people together through walking, jogging, running, volunteering, and supporting others.

Whether you have recently arrived in Malaysia or have lived here for some time, parkrun offers a simple way to get outdoors, meet people, and become more familiar with your local community.

What Is ParkRun?

Parkrun brings people together every Saturday for free community events. Participants can walk, jog, or run, volunteer, or simply come along to encourage others.

There is no need to be an experienced runner to take part. The various methods of participation ensure that the event is available to individuals with diverse hobbies and physical capabilities.

To a new resident, the events provide a calm environment to meet neighbors outside of employment or a specific street. By performing a regular activity together, residents speak more easily and create social bonds over many weeks.

Getting involved in a local area is a small action that helps a resident feel comfortable in a different nation.

Where to Find ParkRun in Malaysia

Malaysia has three active parkrun locations:

  1. Presint 18 parkrun, Putrajaya
  2. Taman Tasik Kota Puteri
  3. Taman Pudu Ulu

The locations provide a chance to be outside and meet residents through a collective activity. Before you go, check the official parkrun Malaysia website to find current data, rules for participation and changes to the locations or times.

If you are new to the region, a visit to a local event is an effective way to see areas away from your daily path. You might see a nearby park, start a new activity for the weekend or enjoy meeting the individuals who live in your area.

Making a New Place Feel Like Home

An international relocation involves many practical tasks, like finding a house, using local utilities and starting new habits. After you complete the basic tasks, finding ways to meet neighbors makes the experience more positive.

As an international moving company, Asian Tigers knows that living in a different nation requires more than moving boxes. The movers help families manage the physical parts of a move while the families focus on learning about their new environment.

In some cases, a family may use temporary storage while they finish the paperwork for a house. The move leads to a new period of life which includes the chance to find local hobbies and make new friends.

Local activities like parkrun is a helpful beginning – there is no requirement that you know a neighbor before you arrive or that you perform at a specific level. To feel more connected, you simply arrive and join the group.
