Cybersecurity in Motion: Why Awareness Matters in the Relocation Industry - with Gordon Bell

Host: Today we’re here with Gordon Bell. Gordon, welcome.

Gordon Bell: Thanks. Glad to be here.

Host: Gordon, today we’re here to talk about cyber security. Why is cyber security something we’re even talking about on a moving industry podcast?

Gordon Bell: Because it affects everyone. Phishing scams, ransomware, targeted attacks on company databases have all become more common. And it’s not just about IT anymore. These threats usually start with one person clicking something they shouldn’t. That means we all have a role to play. Most cyber attacks are pretty basic. They rely on people making small mistakes: clicking on a fake email, downloading something without realizing the risk. Training helps people spot those red flags. If we treat cyber security like we treat packing a container or completing a customs form, then we’re already halfway there.

Host: And nobody can be an expert at them all. What’s the key takeaway for somebody working in HR or operations in the moving industry space?

Gordon Bell: You don’t need to be a tech expert; you just need to be aware. Think of it like a safety briefing. We already train people to lift boxes the right way or avoid injury on-site. This is the digital version of that. The goal is to be prepared, not paranoid.

Host: Okay. So let’s say somebody gets an email that just looks a little off. Maybe they’re asked to change a password, which seems strange. What should they do?

Gordon Bell: Don’t rush. If something feels wrong, it probably is. Double-check with IT or just don’t click. That hesitation can save a lot of trouble. We’re not asking people to solve cyber crime, just to slow down and think before reacting.

Host: The industry trains for customs compliance, fragile shipments… is this just another form of training that should be done by everybody?

Gordon Bell: Our people already know how to follow process and stay alert. Cyber security is no different. And a little awareness honestly really does go a long way.

Host: Gordon, I know this isn’t the flashiest topic, but it is clearly a critical one.

Gordon Bell: At the end of the day, this is about protecting the work that we do and the people we do it for.

Host: Thanks, Gordon.
