1. Do a Walkthrough
Before you move everything into your new house, doing a walkthrough is essential. Walking through your new home while empty gives you a whole picture of how to utilize the space. You can plan where you would like your furniture to go in, which room should be the dressing room, and so on. In addition, if you are renting an apartment, you should check the condition of utilities while walking through the new home. Try to open all the doors and cabinets, test the sink, and switch on and off all lights. If something is not working, report it to the landlord so that they can take care of it.
2. Set up the utilities
After the walkthrough, you should get your hands on setting up the utilities: water, gas, and electricity. Depending on the location of your new home, you may or may not have a choice in choosing which company supports your utilities. Although physical utility companies are usually timely about activation, the sooner you notify them of your move-in date, the faster you can get utilities ready to use. Imagine when you want to shower after unpacking your boxes, but you cannot as the water supply is still not connected with the utility company. That would be a nightmare. Therefore, we highly suggest that on the move-in day, ensure your electric, gas, water, heating and cooling, phone, and internet are all set.
3. Update your address
After settling most of the utilities in your new house or apartment, you should update your address. We use the address to register many things, including credit cards, subscription services, your bank, insurance, loans, and mortgages. If you do not update those addresses timely, you may lose some important documents. To make it easy, you can also draw up a list of departments or corporates that need to opt for updating the address to make the process smoother.
4. Schedule a deep cleaning session
There’s no better time to get your home sparkling clean than when it’s empty. Schedule a deep cleaning session to get it started. Starting from high before you clean low. High objects such as ceiling fans and overhead lighting fixtures are more prone to getting grimy. They are not easy to reach; as a result many dust and dirt will stick on those objects. Plan to clean your house from top to bottom, every nook and cranny. After cleaning top items, schedule a cleaning session for the floor. Later, you can move your focus to smaller parts such as the fridge, kitchen, and bathrooms.
5. Plan and move things in
You’ll save yourself a lot of time and energy when moving into a new home if you make a plan of how things move in instead of just winging it. It is particularly true for large, heavy items like a fridge and sofa. While you probably already have a basic idea of what goes in what room from the walkthrough you have done previously, give yourself a moment to think about the actual setup. You can draw the plan on paper and transform it into a floor map. You can change it later, but diving into this task with a plan will make the job easier and smoother.
