If you are new to Asia, you might want to know about the Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Tuen Ng Festival. It is a traditional Chinese festival celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. This year, it falls on the 18th June and it is a public holiday in Hong Kong. This festival is one of the most significant Chinese Festivals on the lunar calendar.
The festival is to commemorate Qu Yuan who was known for his patriotism during the warring states period of ancient China. It is a traditional custom for Chinese to eat ‘zongzi‘, a kind of sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. They are usually made of glutinous rice with meat or some other fillings. Approaching to the festival, you will find different flavors and shapes of ‘zongzi‘ available in the supermarkets. They are all tasty.
Another highlight of this festival is the Dragon Boat Race. The race is a daylong event. All kinds of
organizations from around the globe such as police, fireman, and army….etc. travel to Hong Kong and participate in the race. The race will take place in Shat Tin, Lantau Island, and Aberdeen. They usually attract a large audience. Hope you can enjoy watching the exciting dragon boat races.
