More and more expats consider living in Vietnam these days, due to the diverse foods, beautiful beaches and mountains, and low living cost. Cost of accommodation

Many expats choose to stay in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, which are two major cities in Vietnam. Even in these two cities, a couple can rent a decent one-bedroom apartment by spending around USD$500. If you live outside of these two largest cities, in places like Hoi An and Nha Trang, the rent will be even less.

Cost of Food

In Vietnam, there are restaurants that will suit every budget and taste. You can have buffets in 5-star hotels and also local food on mouth-watering streets. If you dine in a fairly good restaurant five nights a week, including beer or soft drinks, food may cost you around US$300. If you live in other cities, the expense may drop 10-20%.

Cost of Transportation

Buses are the cheapest way to get around Ho Chi Minh City. However, they are designed mainly for locals, so the bus routes are only printed in Vietnamese, and most of the bus drivers cannot speak English. Taxis in Ho Chi Minh City are plentiful and affordable. Most meters start at about US$0.5. You can also own a car. Foreigners with a valid passport and work permit can legally buy and own a car in Vietnam. As long as you have an international driver license, you can successfully apply for a driver license in Vietnam.
