Bridging the Gap: How Feeding Hong Kong Turns Surplus into Support

Every day in Hong Kong, thousands of tonnes of edible food are discarded while many families face food insecurity. Feeding Hong Kong, a registered charity established in 2011, is tackling this imbalance by rescuing quality surplus food and redirecting it to those in need.

The organisation collects excess stock from food companies and distributes it through a network of more than 150 partner charities across the city. These charities provide support to elderly residents, low-income families, and other vulnerable groups. By redistributing perfectly good food, Feeding Hong Kong reduces both hunger and landfill waste.

It is currently the only food bank in Hong Kong accredited by the Global FoodBanking Network. In one year alone, Feeding Hong Kong rescued 1,200 tonnes of food, helped provide 3.3 million meals, and prevented 2.2 million kilograms of carbon emissions.

The organisation also runs targeted campaigns such as “Mooncake Madness,” which redistributes surplus festive goods to elderly homes and community kitchens. These seasonal efforts not only reduce waste but also bring joy to underserved communities during important cultural celebrations.

Despite its success, Feeding Hong Kong continues to face challenges. Logistics, funding, and volunteer capacity remain critical areas for ongoing support. To scale its impact, the organisation is investing in better transport, additional storage space, and partnerships with socially responsible businesses.
