Gordon Bell, Chairman of Asian Tigers and one of FIDI’s newest Board members, has had a distinguished career that has spanned some of Asia’s most exciting destinations. His continued journey is marked by professional and personal milestones, which tell a compelling story of perseverance, adaptability, and success. Dominic Weaver meets with Bell to hear about some of these many highlights along this journey.

Early Struggles and Growth

Born in Singapore, Bell was dispatched to boarding school in Scotland while his parents remained in Asia. Much as he loved sports and had a gregarious childhood, this natural career progression from boarding school to banking or the military simply did not make sense to him. The early career of Bell was at the Bank of Scotland; it lasted some uninspiring few years until his parents intervened and sent him off to France to learn French. In retrospect, this call turned out to be a major career decision, setting him off on his diversified career path.

Career in the Moving Industry

Back in Singapore, Bell’s father arranged a job for him with K C Dat, a supplier associated with Caltex. Bell’s induction into the moving business was anything but glamorous. First put to work in a warehouse, he had to bear physically demanding, quite Fullerian tasks ranging from container unloading to paper cutting. His first moving job was particularly challenging, involving the transport of a heavy piece of wooden artwork down 14 storeys. The experience was almost enough to make him quit. However, it was his determination and help from colleagues that got him through the tough early days.

Rising Through the Ranks

The move from packaging and driving forklifts into surveys and managing moves really accelerated Bell’s career. His time in Singapore was cut short to enlist in national service that took him to Hong Kong. There his passion for rugby provided not only a strong social base but support in business as well. He began making contacts through his involvement in the rugby community, setting the stage for himself to be one of the largest moving industry operators.

In Hong Kong, he worked for Pandair Freight and later for Four Winds, becoming the managing director and turning that ailing company into a profitable one. The success smoothed his way into an assignment with Thai International in Bangkok, where he managed a good social life with the professional demands.

Asian Tigers and the Leadership

Finally, wanderlust took Bell to Kuala Lumpur with an appointment made by Transpo Movers, a division of the Asian Tigers Group. It was a ten-year tenure from 1992 to 2004, replete with achievements that finally saw his move to Singapore as K C Dat brought him home. So from 2004 to 2019, working for the growth and success of the company with astounding acumen in its leadership and industry knowhow, Bell played a cardinal role in deciding the strategic pathway to follow.

Moved to the UK in 2019, Bell took up a management position at Asian Tigers, where he has since continued to influence the operations and expansion. His story, from reluctant newcomer to seasoned moving industry leader, testifies to his persistence and determination.

Looking Back, Looking Ahead:

If anything, looking back over his journey, Bell recognizes the defining moments and difficulties that shaped his career. If anything, it evidences the adages of working hard, moving with times, and using one’s passion to fuel professional growth. In that respect, he has been an inspiration for all those engaged in the moving industry and beyond, a clear example of how the rewards come along with embracing challenges and moving ahead following on up with the set targets.
