Chinese New Year, popularly known as the Spring Festival or Chūnjié in Mandarin, happens to be the most distinctive Chinese traditional festival that dates back over 4000 years. Normally, the New Year is considered to start at the beginning of the first new moon, generally falling between the end of January and the first fifteen days of the first month in the lunar calendar up to the full moon. Well, in 2023, Chinese New Year will be on the 22nd, bringing along best wishes of Happy New Year (新年快乐) and may all your dreams come true.

Each year in the Lunar calendar is represented by any of 12 zodiac animals included in the cycle of 12 stations or “signs” along the apparent path of the sun through the cosmos. The year 2023 is going to be the rabbit year, a Chinese zodiac sign associated with good luck and good health. According to Chinese culture, the Chinese zodiac controls everything from personality to even the compatibility of someone with other people in a relationship. This year many people will be seeking this rabbit to bring joy and prosperity.

There is a lot that is done during the Chinese New Year. Many of the Chinese New Year customs have been widely observed for thousands of years, including reunion dinner with family, giving red envelopes, pasting the “Fu” character, visiting friends and relatives, decoration with Chinese knots and window paper-cuts, and many more. The Lantern Festival, falling on the 15th day of the lunar month, marks the New Year celebrations by illuminating bright lanterns lighting up the night sky.

For the past 3 years, to avert the mass exodus of people that easily spreads the coronavirus, China has been promoting off-peak travel and encouraging staying put during holidays. We see a turning point in policy and believe that 2023 will usher in a peak for tourism. This year, families can finally reunite and Chinese people will be able to experience a Chinese New Year 2022/2023 the way that is supposed to be: with excitement, hope for good times ahead, and gratitude for family and health (健康).
