The marking on the gaur carcass revealed claw marks on its side and bite marks on the throat. But it wasn&#8217;t until WWF placed camera traps in the same spot that we were able <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finally confirm that a tiger killed the gaur. This is a rare and important find.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The research team was delighted <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">confirm its identity as MKM8, a male tiger they have been tracking since 2014. &#8220;MK&#8221; refers to him being a resident of Mae Wong-Klong Lan National\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/asiantigersgroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/MKM8-Camera-trap-photo_ATM-banner-\u00a9-DNP-_-WWF-Thailand-825x510-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"825\" height=\"510\" \/><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parks, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;M<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; represents his gender.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rare <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to capture <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a tiger <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">killing <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gaur <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">camera. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even for <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tigers, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">killing <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a gaur <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is not an <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">easy task,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Rungnapa Phoonjampa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, WWF-<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thailand&#8217;s <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mae <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wong and Klong Lan Project Manager<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By monitoring the carcass, we discovered that MKM8 came <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feed over a period of about two weeks. This indicates the importance of large ungulate prey such as gaur and sambar for tigers because one kill can provide so much food. Our Tiger Recovery Project is trying to increase these large ungulates through patrolling, community outreach, and habitat improvement (creating saltlick and grassland).\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What&#8217;s even more remarkable is that Mae Wong National Park is not the tiger&#8217;s first home. He was born in Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, further south. We first captured him on camera in Mae Wong in 2014 and he has been a resident in this park since then.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Huai Kha Khaeng and Mae Wong are part of Thailand&#8217;s Western Forest Complex<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is earmarked by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the country&#8217;s tiger recovery plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.or.th\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WWF-Thailand<\/a> has been working with DNP on tiger research and conservation in Mae Wong<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Klong Lan National Parks since 2012. The team is extremely happy to see our efforts paid off with tiger MKM8 growing up to be so healthy and strong. He is about 8-year-old now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thailand has one <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the last strongholds of wild tigers in Southeast Asia, and this recent camera trap video provides further evidence of the need to continue protecting the landscape. <\/span><\/p><p><a
