But other factors too have come together to create the most unstable environment that the shipping industry has ever experienced. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/asiantigersgroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/contaniner_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"626\" height=\"351\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-22608 size-full\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Why does this matter to an individual relocating from Shanghai to London<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">or <a href=\"https:\/\/asiantigersgroup.com\/resources\/destination-guide\/singapore\/\">Singapore<\/a> to Los Angeles<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The easy answer to that question is $$$. In November of 2020, a mere two months ago, at the time <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">this writing, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a 40<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8216; container from <a href=\"https:\/\/asiantigersgroup.com\/resources\/destination-guide\/hong-kong\/\">Hong Kong<\/a> to the UK cost about $2,500. Today that same 40&#8242; container would cost $<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">12,000<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">+.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/asiantigersgroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/commercial-freight-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-22536 size-large\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That&#8217;s if you can get <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">40&#8242; and, if you get the container, you&#8217;ll be lucky to get space on a ship. And then, if against all odds, you&#8217;ve managed to get this far, your container will likely sit moored outside the harbour in the UK or USA for weeks,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">walling for a slot to open up so the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ship <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">be <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">unloaded.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Individuals and their families, <a href=\"https:\/\/asiantigersgroup.com\/service\/relocation-management-services\/\">relocation internationally<\/a>, are not accustomed to hearing answers like &#8220;I don&#8217;t know when your shipment will arrive&#8221; or &#8220;I don&#8217;t know how much it will cost because shipping costs are gyrating like never before.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/asiantigersgroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/family-moving_edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"626\" height=\"417\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-22609 size-full\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Several things need <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">happen before this situation, and international relocations, can return to normal: <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span>COVID vaccines and vaccinations must have broad take <\/span><span>up <\/span><span>so that shipping crews and ground transportation works <\/span>can return to work. That is happening, yes, but very slowly.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brexit fallout has to be assimilated. It won&#8217;t be easy, but the new rules of the road have to become widely understood <\/span>and adapted to.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A massive repositioning of empty containers in the USA and Europe have to make their way back to China and the rest <\/span>of <span>Asia.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It would help if a gradual and orderly economic recovery were to come to pass. That&#8217;s asking a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lot, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I realize, but this has been very difficult to give bad news to individuals and their families who are in the process of relocating internationally.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What can <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">do<\/span><b>? <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">First, be informed and knowledgeable. You&#8217;ve taken a good first step if you arrive at this point. Second, manage your expectations<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You&#8217;ll likely have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">deal with a high degree of uncertainty regarding the timing and price of your international relocation. Third, be proactive by asking your moving company or relocation consultant about the latest status and developments.
